So, I promised to take you into my library to take a look at some of my very favorite books. It’s difficult to decide what, exactly, to show you. I’m kind of a book addict!
Although I love the public library, and I find the history resources there very helpful, it’s difficult to find the quality Christian resources and novels we crave. As a parent, it’s important to me to expose my children to a variety of Christian books, DVDs and audiobooks (oh, do we have some wonderful audiobooks!). The Lord has provided some wonderful resources in some very creative ways. We find them at the $.50 bookstore, online at used bookstores, at garage sales and on eBay. Other resources strike me as important enough to bite the bullet: we buy them new. These books and media show up at Easter, under the Christmas tree, for birthdays (and sometimes just because it’s Tuesday!).
Joey Allen’s Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers series made our list of favorites when the kids were younger. In fact, we love these books so much, they no longer dwell in our home library. We’ve loaned them out numerous times, and this last time they just didn’t come home.
The four Big Thoughts books cover some very important issues for four to seven year olds. Mr. Allen explains The Trinity, The Gospel, The Scripture, and The Mission in concise, easy-to-understand language and adorable pictures. The books are the perfect size for little hands. I started using these when my youngest boys were 3 and 4. Not only did they love the books, they understood the concepts! (These are GREAT books to share with new Christian parents as well! I love using children’s materials to help mentor a new believer. What better way to help someone understand than to help them teach it to their children?)
Each page has a new, or expanded, idea regarding the topic. These ideas are rooted in Scripture. There are several Bible references for each thought, allowing the parent to confirm the truth behind the statements.
Next week, I’ll share some of our favorite middle grade and young adult theology / apologetics resources. This coming Resurrection Day, skip the chocolate bunny and fill some little hearts and minds with Truth!
