5 Tools Needed to Reach Today’s Teens

“I have ministered to adolescents for eleven years, eight of them as a youth minister. Based on my conversations with kids and observations in the culture, I consider these five theological tools essential for parents, pastors, and youth ministers hoping to minister effectively to today’s teens.”  Cameron Cole gives a list of five things we need to be to teach our teens (and I would argue that we need to teach to our teens).  He includes suggested reading for each subject.  I am considering adding these books to our high school reading list. Showing Kids the Salvation Thread ~ 66 Books One Story by Paul Reynolds

66 Books One StoryThere are a lot of books in the world.  Few are as exciting to me as the books that help children understand Scripture better.

I don’t think there is any substitute to Scripture itself.  However, it can be difficult for children to discern the overall storyline of Scripture when their understanding of the Bible consists of seemingly isolated hero stories.  When kids think the Bible is really about the people within its pages — Samson, Ruth, or Noah — they can miss the true meaning.

Paul Reynolds has written a wonderful book that can be used in morning devotions, at family worship, or read by older children (8-12) on their own.  66 Books One Story: A Guide to Every Book of the Bible (Christian Focus Publications, 2013) is a 235 page overview of Scripture. Continue Reading →

Ford_Madox_Brown 1821-1893Are You Teaching a Child or Training a Teen?

Wise words from Mark Gregston:  “Children spend the majority of their lives being taught, whether that’s in the classroom, at church, or in their own home.  By the time they reach their teens, they have a large amount of practical knowledge stored up inside their heads.  It’s not that teenagers know it all (even though they can act like it many times)—they still need to learn.  But as they progress into adulthood, what they really require is a place to practice what they’ve learned.” Continue Reading →

Georges_de_La_TourThe Highlights are Not Enough

“According to researcher George Barna, most children’s Sunday School curricula only cover 40-60 of the “major” stories of Scripture.  The “minor” stories (which one are those, exactly?) are totally missed, and even the major ones tend to be summarized at the lower grades.  In other words, the Bible is taught to children as a collection of stories rather than ONE story, hopping and skipping through the Bible to just give the highlights.”  John C. Kwasny, Ph.D. of One Story Ministries explains the problem with this popular approach to teaching kids the Bible. Continue Reading →

A Life Sacrificed Well ~ Nate Saint: Operation Auca by Nancy Drummond

Nate SaintI read a lot of middle grade and young adult Christian biographies.  A lot of them.  They all tend to be edifying, to point my mind toward Christ, and to help me contemplate how I spend the hours of my own life.  I’ve found they tend to do the same for my children.

Few of them touch me so deeply that I cry.

Nancy Drummond’s new biography of Nate Saint is a rare emotional gem.  Nate Saint: Operation Auca (Christian Focus Publications, 2012) is written for ages 9 to 14 (or to be used as a read-aloud for younger children) for Christian Focus’ Torchbearers line.  The Torchbearers series covers the lives of Christian martyrs in a narrative fashion. The Three Most Powerful Words in the Universe

Most Powerful WordsI’m going to let you in on a secret that’s pretty well known by the people around me.

I am not a supermom.

I don’t speak in a sing-song voice. I can’t make a cake look like anything other than a cake.  Sometimes my microwave goes weeks without getting cleaned.  I forget about holidays until noon on the day they are occurring.  I even fall down on the whole chronicling-my-kids’-lives-in-photos-thing.  My husband recently joined Facebook, and now I sometimes remember to take pictures at the Science Museum so he can see how much fun we’re having.

I know where my strengths lie… and I am painfully aware of my weaknesses. Continue Reading →

The Promise of the Tabernacle Fulfilled ~ God’s Special Tent by Jean Stapleton

God's Special TentHave you ever noticed how much of the Old Testament is devoted to the planning, building and use of the tabernacle?  2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”  Even the long, detailed sections about the tabernacle.

The tabernacle, and the temple after it, were just a shadow of a promise God later fulfilled through the coming of Christ and the New Covenant.  I found a short article about that at Ligonier Ministries.  You can read “The True Tabernacle” by Douglas Kelly for a little perspective on the importance of this tent God had the Israelites build.

Long story short, if we’re going to teach our children about the Bible, we need to teach them the story of the tabernacle and the priestly system.  That can be a daunting task.  A new book written by Jean Stapleton, God’s Special Tent (Christian Focus Publications, 2013) can help.  Written for ages 8-12, God’s Special Tent is a 44-page activity book. Waterhouse-Diogenes_1882Patrick the Saint

Have you or your children ever wondered what Saint Patrick’s Day is really about?  Was there really a Patrick – and what’s the deal with the shamrock?  Christian History Magazine’s archives are an excellent resource.  They’ve allowed public access to this article about Patrick by Mary Cagney:  “A fleet of 50 currachs (longboats) weaved its way toward the shore, where a young Roman Brit and his family walked. His name was Patricius, the 16-year-old son of a civil magistrate and tax collector. He had heard stories of Irish raiders who captured slaves and took them “to the ends of the world,” and as he studied the longboats, he no doubt began imagining the worst.” Continue Reading →

Dave Stelzl blogs and speaks about raising children to be entrepreneurs.  He has carried that teaching into their family’s homeschool.  Recently, his children ran up against new legislation that had the potential to kill a small business they were already running.  Here, he writes about what they learned:  “It’s always interesting, and educational, to talk with someone who oversees a state law on something like this.  As part of the home school learning process, this is the kind of call you want your kids to make – learning to ask the right questions, but also learning how laws are made, and how not to make laws or rules.  It’s also a time to practice having the right response – and learning to be creative rather than just giving up.  As we work through this exercise, some important questions and learning concepts come to mind…”

A Warrior for Christ ~ John Knox: The Sharpened Sword by Catherine Mackenzie

John KnoxIt’s no secret that I love Christian Focus Publication’s Trailblazers line of Christian biographies for children ages 9-14).  They are written by various authors in a narrative format with fictionalized dialogue.  Reading a Trailblazers book almost feels as though one is reading a novel rather than a biography.

I also really appreciate the fact that the Trailblazers series covers figures from Christian history that are generally not available in books for children.  Some of the men and women they’ve covered in their 35 published biographies (so far) include John Stott, John Calvin, Martin Lloyd-Jones, and Queen Mary of Orange.  See what I mean? Not your average fare.  The books also cover some of the wonderful missionaries we all love to read about like Mary Slessor, Gladys Aylward and Adoniram Judson.

These books have become a standard part of our history curriculum.

I was excited to see a new addition to the Trailblazers line, John Knox: The Sharpened Sword by Catherine Mackenzie (Christian Focus Publications, 2012).  Continue Reading →

Carl_Spitzweg_1845-1846Daniel Darling has written two terrific articles for fathers that you won’t want to miss:

5 Things Every Daughter Needs to Hear From Her Dad

“…I love having daughters. There is something about having a daughter that softens a man, adds a certain tenderness to his soul. In that spirit, I’d like to share five things every daughter needs to hear from her father…”  ~ Daniel Darling

5 Things Every Son Needs to Hear From His Dad

In my pastoral role, I’ve seen the devastating effects of a father’s absence or lack of leadership in the life of his son.

Fathering your sons is a serious job, men. And so in that spirit, I’d like to offer five things every son needs to hear from his father…”  ~ Daniel Darling Continue Reading →

I had the opportunity to participate in this article for Focus on the Family.  My husband and I have found benefit in developing a family mission statement. Continue Reading →
